Over twenty years ago, a gate opened, the shadowy area around it putting everyone trapped within to sleep...
Never to awake up again.
Monsters, creatures of darkness, power and nightmares come from the gates. Only a handful of people have learned to enter the gate zones. Called dungeons. Most can only enter at night, leaving the heart of the day unprotected from the creatures that come from that other realm to prey on the weak. Consuming them fully.
Nick Burgess is one of those hapless trapped civilians. Only, as his body tries to force him to freeze in place, to cripple him for the last time, he manages to move. It isn't much, but the preparations he's made have worked, a little. Because if he can move, he can, potentially, fight the monsters coming for him.
Now he must survive with the help of new friends and together, possibly, they can change the face of the war and for the first time in decades meet the monsters where they hold ultimate power.

Because humanity is losing this terrible war, and Nick Burgess will do anything to stop that from happening. Even if it costs him his very mind, to bring about.
