Firearms technology dominates the modern day battlefield, but how did the earliest guns affect battles in the Middle Ages? From their earliest incarnations in the 14th Century - which were as much a danger to their operator as they were to the enemy - to the muskets and breech-loading rifles of the 19th century, Piers Platt traces the technological advancements that revolutionized weapons, and how infantry tactics were forced to evolve as new and more lethal weapons were developed.

Interview with the Author

Q - What makes From the Arquebus... special?
A - I have always been a student of military history, and especially fascinated by strategy and tactics; in fact, that was my focus in college. At the same time, I was training to become an officer in the U.S. Army, so I wanted to get a better understanding of infantry tactics in particular, since so much of our training revolves around infantry tasks. And I realized, as I started to read, that technology had had a profound impact on those tactics, and in particular, firearms technology revolutionized the way armies fought. So I decided to try to find some lessons that I could take with me in my Army career - and then put it all in a short, easy-to-read military science book.

Q - Why should readers give this book a try?
A - It's a short, easy read, and I think you'll find it's got some insightful conclusions on how militaries can best adapt to changing technologies. Any students of gun history, war history non fiction, or firearms training will find this book a quick, enjoyable, and insightful read. A lot of the focus is on the medieval period through the Napoleonic wars, and how the arquebus, musket, and breechloaders evolved over time.

Q - Have you written other books?
A - Yup! If you're into military history, you might want to check out Combat and Other Shenanigans, the NY Times-bestselling memoir of my year in Iraq as a tank and scout platoon leader. You can get it for free here: http://piersplatt.com/newsletter (copy and paste into your browser).
