When Titus of Cissanbyrig is elevated and becomes Thegn Titus of Wiltun, his woman Yanna, succumbing to her fear, chooses to stay in Frankia, going to live with her sister in Paris, which proves to be a fateful decision. Shortly after her arrival, a vast army of Vikings led by Sigfred lays siege to the city; shortly after the siege begins, Yanna learns that she is carrying Titus’ child, something that she had been told was impossible, and will risk her life.

As conditions worsen, food becomes scarcer, and the inhabitants of Paris begin resorting to unspeakable acts to stave off starvation, Yanna and three other pregnant women are secreted away in the crypt of one of the many Paris churches. These women—Yanna, a prostitute, a fallen warrior’s widow, and the nobly born wife of one of Count Odo’s lieutenants—along with the noblewoman’s bodyguard and a monk, find themselves under assault by a man driven mad with hunger, leading a band of similarly desperate Parisians, seeing sustenance in the flesh of themselves and their unborn children.

While the battle for Paris rages outside the walls, these five people are fighting to protect the lives of their unborn children from an unimaginable fate even as they grow weaker from deprivation. Will Yanna live to fulfill her vow of reuniting with her love, the huge Saxon Thegn Titus of Wiltun?
