2011 Locus Award for Best Fantasy Novel (nominee)
DI Cass Jones (ex-undercover, takes kickbacks and occasionally drugs, but not an overly bad man) is working two cases: the accidental gangland shooting of two schoolkids, and a serial killer investigation - when his younger brother, a successful accountant working for a subsidiary of The Bank, shoots his wife and son before committing suicide himself, leaving only a confused note that makes no sense. It's not long before Cass's affair with his brother's wife comes out. Then test results show that he had sex with her only hours before her death . . . and his fingerprints are on the shotgun. Cass is suspended, but as his life unravels around him, he starts his own investigation into who might be setting him up, and finds a mystery man, Mr Bright, who has links not just to him, but to the two cases he was working on when his world blew up. Cass begins to suspect there is someone - or something - bigger and more sinister pulling all the strings, and it's connected with The Bank, the company created by a collection of the world's wealthiest men and now running most of the world's economy. Something isn't right. And Cass has a gut feeling that The Bank know more than their sleek representatives have revealed.
