Kenny Reed’s been a screwup as long as he can remember, carried along by inertia and indecision. Before he even noticed, his life whipped by him as fast as the current of his town’s creek, both dangerously close to ruin. But this time Kenny’s mistakes have led him to wake up battered in a hospital room where even the nurses can’t bear to look at him.
It turns out he’s accidentally killed his own brother, beloved local police officer Jake, while driving drunk. Kenny’s parents, and Jake’s widow and young son, aren’t the only ones trying to come to terms with the aftermath of what he’s done. Kenny himself is struggling and finds himself facing a hostile community with very few people on his side.
With the backdrop of a spring flood, Kenny must learn to step past what he’s done, release his pain and guilt, and get on with his life. But that’s not so easily done. Tempting fate and looking for a sign, Kenny enters the deadly flood waters, risking his own life in the hopes of finding retribution.
