From Booklist
In this fifth installment in Black's suspense series featuring millionaire NYPD detective Conrad Voort, the Jag-driving cop is up against a ruthless money-laundering attorney and his brutal henchmen. While kayaking off the New York City shore in the rough waters known as Hell's Gate, Voort and his girlfriend, Camilla, discover a corpse caught in the raging current. An autopsy confirms that the victim was murdered, and Voort begins an investigation--an investigation that soon runs him afoul of a group of foreign mercenaries. Tricked into a setup, Voort is darted like an animal and brought helpless to a nightmarish meeting where the thugs threaten him with sexual assault, as well as the murder of his friends and family. It is here that a promising story line heads down the tubes as Voort goes Rambo and seeks revenge. The rest of the book is full of way too much male angst and macho posturing and concludes with a contrived, pat ending. Recommended only for those holding the previous titles and who want to have the whole series. Michael Gannon
