Kate knows every one of the 184 miles of waterway between Cumberland, Maryland, and Georgetown by heart. She also knows she can't make the perilous trip down the C&O Canal alone. Her family depends on the income from the coal they haul each year, but Papa is dead, Kate's new stepfather is off fighting for the Union, Mama is expecting a baby and a solo trip is out of the question. As much as Kate resents her stepbrother, Seth, she must begrudgingly enlist his help. With Kate at the tiller, they risk encounters with rebels, manage the canal's locks, and conceal the fact that they are two children traveling alone. Along the way, Kate discovers that learning to work together is more than just a means of survival. It is reason to hope that she might one day belong to a real family again.
