The Outlaw and the U.S. Marshal
(2024)(The third book in the Outlaw Brides series)
A novel by Charlene Raddon
Denver laundress Elise Galligher aids her midwife sister Maeve in delivering a baby at a bordello. When Maeve takes a train to deliver the infant to a buyer in Cheyenne, as she's done before with unwanted children, Elise intervenes and kidnaps the child to return her to her mother, who has married the father.
U.S. Marshal Garrick Longworth becomes involved when Maeve tells him Elise stole her baby and asks him to get it back. Longworth catches up to Elise on a train returning to Denver and puts her under temporary arrest. The situation escalates when train robbers take Elise and the baby hostage as they escape. Garrick captures them and has the posse take the prisoners to jail.
He must get Elise and her tiny charge back to Denver. They head out on horseback until a flooded river strands them. The journey is fraught with danger, including a wolf attack and a confrontation with Elise's outlaw brother. But despite all this, a closeness develops between Garrick and Elise.
In Denver, Elise has no home, job, or money. Garrick does his best to help. They declare their love for each other, but then he is sent away on a job, and Maeve does her best to get Elise arrested for the kidnapping. Will Elise end up in prison, or will it be Maeve? Where is Garrick? Will he return to Denver in time to save Elise and see that Maeve gets her just deserts?
