After helping Jericho and Ironton fight off an invading Confederate unit, Toby begins to settle down in his job as sheriff of Jericho. When his friend, Cully Ransom, tells him of his plans to ask Julia Cleveland, daughter of Jericho’s mayor, Andrew Cleveland, to marry him, but he worries about where they will live, Toby suggests they build a house next to his in Jericho. Before Ransom’s plans can be fulfilled, however, they learn that a slave patrol is lurking across the river, and they’re there to find Toby. Ransom puts his wedding plans on hold and helps to organize a force to deal with the raiders, and Toby learns the meaning of true friendship in the process.
