Six-year-old Bess Frere has been told never to consort with strangers. But this is before her mother is charged with drink-driving and before her father leaves home - and before Bess's grandfather introduces her to Conal Macnair, a mysterious, child-like young man, who forms a bond of sympathy with the hurt and lonely little girl.
