These are not Union Soldiers, nor even Confederate soldiers. They were guerrillas and now simply outlaws under the command of a monster named "Bloody" Bill Anderson who is so brutal that even the long-time raider Quantrill has broken with him. They ransack the town, steal all the valuables on the train, set everything afire, including the train, and ride out with Horace Thomas tied to a horse. Kitty Thomas can only watch helplessly.
