Snowball the Tailor is riding his trusty steed Brutus toward the village of Ampleforth when he is attacked by a fearsome, shape-shifting spirit that first appears as a crow and then a dog that speaks in the tongue of men. The creature, the earthbound revenant of a dead criminal, forces the humble tailor into finding a priest to give him absolution so that he will haunt the night no more. Snowball has no choice but to agree...however, he soon finds the monster has tricked him. He must not only lay that one ghost to rest, but two of its friends from the spirit world... Will he ever see his home again, or his wife, the frying pan wielding Mildred?

A retelling with a twist of the original medieval tale written down by the Monk of Byland in the Middle Ages
