Burning of Billy Toober

(1974)
(A book in the Detective Superintendent George Rogers series)
A novel by

Small-time crook and police-informer Billy Toober is dead worried. His latest treachery has put gang boss Grattan behind bars, so when the latter's fearsome brother Dummy is ordered to work Toober over, he pleads protection from his "friend" Detective Chief Superintendent Rogers. "Can't be done," says Rogers. That night a corpse is found in a burnt-out gardener's shed in the local park. The body has been deliberately and callously destroyed by fire to prevent recognition, but Rogers is able to identify the charred remains as those of the unfortunate Billy Toober. A murder investigation swings into action, headed by Rogers, whose nagging preoccupations - a suspicious wife and a demanding mistress - are forced to take second place to the destruction of a merciless gang of terrifying proportions. Jonathan Ross, the pseudonym of an ex-Detective Superintendent (John Rossiter), has written a gripping, authentically detailed crime novel with a well-structured plot, convincing characters, no loose ends, and a tremendous twist in the tail.
