In 1913, on Salome McKenna's seventh birthday, her family emigrates from Ireland to the Cape. Too late they discover that, tragically, they have left her behind. Unknown to them, Marion Culham-Browne takes Salome under her wing, intending to arrange her later passage to the Cape. However, Marion's resolution fades as her love for the little girl flourishes, and so Salome becomes one of the Culham-Brownes of Cloonaghvogue Castle. Time and again, Salome feels herself loved and betrayed, uplifted and abandoned, but she is sustained by an indomitable spirit.
