It is the golden age of Augustus, and Rome basks in her glory. Meet Lucan, a young man with a promising future. He comes from a family of modest means but is fortunate to be enrolled in a private school for young patricians. The Goddess Fortuna is fickle, and the winds of fate blow ill. Evil men wish to do him harm. In a series of calamitous events, Lucan is forced to flee Rome for his life. His only option is to join the legions and serve under the eagles to escape the city.
After undergoing a brutal regimen of training, Lucan and his comrades are sent to the Rhine frontier, a perilous place to be posted. They march out with the Army of Rhine under command of Drusus the Elder to begin the summer campaign and the invasion of northeast Germania. Over a period of months, the legions battle a number of German tribes in an effort to subdue the barbarian peoples. Lucan vows to survive the campaign and return to Rome one day to exact vengeance on those who have wronged him.
