“He didn’t die how they said…”
While at his young relative’s funeral, Awan finds these words on a slip of paper in his pocket. He learns many people in the small town of Tropic don’t believe the child died of natural causes as local authorities claim. Awan discovers whatever caused the death of the child is still active, moving through the town at night, enticing children to commit brutal acts of violence. Even worse, the local religious leaders and police seem in on it, facilitating the attacks.
Devising a method to track the entity, Awan discovers an abandoned graveyard. There, a corpse leads him on a wild chase through the desert Southwest where fallout from nuclear testing has made ghosts frighteningly feral, and strange mutations have spawned bizarre creatures.
Awan ultimately uncovers a vast army of the dead he cannot tackle alone. With the help of Winn, Lyman, and Carma, he wages a battle against a religious zealot who requires blood atonement to keep his followers in line.
