Travelers embark on a routine plane flight to Seattle while an entire city vanishes on another continent. Those people eventually land without incident. Except this not exactly their world anymore.
Inspired by a modern tragedy, and told in a second-person voice.
"Three or four or five travelers say it together. 'A city in Brazil is missing.' Or words to that effect. A large town more than a city, as it happens. Eighty thousand strangers in a place you have never visited. For no obvious reason, that community has been removed from the world. Yet there wasn't any blast, and no fire. Nothing so ordinary as that. The reporter doesn't know where the city went. Nobody says why this happened or how such a thing could be. But an ordinary Tuesday has been turned into something wickedly amazing. Eighty thousand souls: Gone. Houses and public buildings, cars and every avenue of communication have been carried away. And left behind is a wide, shallow depression at the juncture of various tropical roads."
Robert Reed is the author of many, many published stories and novels. In 2007, he won a Hugo Award for his novella, "A Billion Eves."
