A professional killer is captured at the site of a mass slaughter. There is no doubt about her guilt, yet every part of her existence remains a mystery. The native animals were proteinaceous spectacles walking on odd-numbered legs. The 31-1s sported five legs, and they had a sturdy grace while moving and a lovely form as they kept still, and they didn't believe in Time, and they had exceptionally little patience for the concept of Death.
Robert Reed has published several hundred science fiction stories, plus more than a dozen novels. His novella, "A Billion Eves," won the Hugo Award in 2007. But Reed is best known for his tales of the Great Ship.
