While volunteering for a program that helps recently released prisoners reacclimate to society, someone suggests I reach out to an inmate that’s still incarcerated.
When I do, he’s a jerk,
but eventually he writes to me again to apologize and ask me to tell him more about myself. Letters turn into emails, emails turn into calls, calls turn into sexts from a contraband phone.
And before I know it, I’m in deep with an inmate that gets busted and thrown in the hole.
Afraid of the strength of our connection and guilty for influencing him to make bad choices,
I decide the best thing I can do for both of us is to keep the distance that has formed between us,
and I block him.
A year later, he shows up at my door,
Telling me if I don’t let him stay with me,
He’ll go back to prison.
