Detective Sergeant Bert Boggis and his colleagues from the County area are facing big trouble from well-organised thieves who have turned their attention to the well-stocked countryside - and, as always when trouble looms, Peeper is recruited against his will to play a central role in the solving of large-scale crime. To his surprise, the skills he has acquired in years of mixing with sophisticated urban rogues prove just as efficacious in thwarting a gang of rustlers reminiscent of the Old West.
