The One Who Almost Got Away
(1996)(The fifth book in the Guiness Gang series)
A novel by Alicia Scott
Library Journal
Caught by FBI agent Regina O'Doul as he is testing a friend's art-theft security system, Jake Guiness finds himself under suspicion for being "The Highwayman," a real thief the FBI is trying to find. While his name is being cleared, Jake offers entree into the rich art world to his increasingly attractive captor, who is forced to pose as his lover. Driven to succeed by memories of her father, Reggie is suspicious and prickly but also lonely. Blindsided by their passion and set up by the real Highwayman, the two are pushed into a dangerous situation that forces an otherwise reluctant trust. Watching the rich, womanizing tycoon fall heavily for the reluctant agent makes for an entertaining and engaging novel, and the ending is perfect. Scott (The One Worth Waiting For, Silhouette, 1996) lives in Cambridge, Mass.-MKC
