Cambridge, 1888. Miss Vanessa Duncan is a young schoolmistress recently arrived from the countryside and living in small but comfortable lodgings. The peaceful atmosphere is shattered when a Fellow of Mathematics is found dead in his rooms from a violent blow to the head. Her neighbour, Mr Weatherburn, had dined with the victim that night and tells her that he had been working on an unsolved puzzle first set by Sir Isaac Newton, the 'n-body problem', for which the King of Sweden has offered a prestigious prize. As Vanessa's relationship with Mr. Weatherburn blossoms another mathematician is murdered in the same fashion and he is thrown into jail. Convinced of his innocence she sets about trying to prove her case. But when a third mathematician dies, and the evidence starts to stack up, it is a race against time to unravel the threads and prove her theory correct..
