Paris, December 1642
While England is torn apart by civil war, Cardinal Richelieu, the man who has ruled France in all but name for the last quarter of a century, slips quietly into death.
Erstwhile lawyer, Gideon Lennox, is now employed by Sir Philip Lord, a notorious mercenary commander with a mysterious past. When Lord is sent to Paris to present King Charles’ condolences to his brother-in-law, King Louis, Gideon is at his side.
However, Gideon and Lord have reasons of their own to be in Paris. They need to find the physician-surgeon Anders Jensen - and find him quickly. The life of the woman Lord loves depends upon it.
A lethal chase through the streets of Paris ends with Gideon fighting for his life beneath the murky waters of the River Seine.
The Alchemist’s Plot
England, March 1643
While the civil war between King Charles and his Parliament continues to tear the nation apart, erstwhile lawyer, Gideon Lennox, returns to England as part of a royal escort and in the employ of Sir Philip Lord, a mercenary commander with a mysterious past.
Accompanied by Gideon and Daniel Bristow - Lord's second in command who has his own history to confront in London - Lord risks a journey behind enemy lines to Mortlake.
They discover the house that once belonged to the alchemist John Dee has become a tapestry works.
Before they can begin to investigate any secrets the property might hold, they learn two of the weavers have taken their own lives within a few days of each other and in the same locked room.
Gideon sets out to find the truth behind the deaths. In the process, he and Lord discover many carefully concealed secrets.
The Cavalier’s Oath
England, May 1643
With the country riven by civil war, word reaches Royalist headquarters in Oxford that the Parliamentarian commander Sir William Waller plans to capture the strategic city of Worcester.
Sir Philip Lord, a mercenary commander with a mysterious past, is sent to help prepare Worcester to withstand a siege. With Lord is Gideon Lennox, a young lawyer, who has been helping Lord unravel the secretive conspiracy that has overshadowed his life.
Gideon is seeking clues to that mystery when a young woman is killed, leading him to fear for the safety of his own beloved, the unattainable Zahara.
Tasked to unmask the murderer, Gideon finds his two investigations lead to the same house - that of the puritan preacher Nehemiah Fisher and his wife Joan. But another death results in Gideon himself falling under suspicion.
When one of the women close to Lord is attacked, the killer leaves a clue, but the finger it points leaves Gideon in a bleak place. If he brings the murderer to justice he risks losing the final chance to uncover Lord’s heritage.
But when the confrontation comes, all choice is taken from him. Facing the murderer alone, Gideon has to unleash his own inner darkness if he is to survive.
