The Innocents

(1973)
A novel by

Celerin, a gifted jeweller with his own shop and a flourishing business in one of the most attractive quarters of Paris, is heartbroken when his wife Annette is run over by a truck. Childlike and trusting, Celerin thought of his marriage as an idyll, with his wife as contented as he was himself. The circumstances of her death, however, trigger doubts in his mind. What was Annette, a social worker, doing on the street where she was killed? None of her clients lived on Rue Washington in one of the most elegant parts of Paris. Why did the police act strangely and secretively? His subsequent investigations lead to some startling discoveries that shed new light upon Annette's enigmatic behaviour in the past. This is yet another of Simenon's subtle probings into the theme of non-communication within the most intimate relationship, marriage.
