The Bolo Battalion

(1966)
A novel by

From dust jacket: "This is a tense, terse and virile story about the guerrilla forces in WWII who were under orders from MacArthur to prepare for the invasion by setting up weather stations and coast watcher stations, to plot channels through minefields, to radio out information and to harass the enemy in every way possible. It is a realistic story and become one of the most exciting stories every written about WWII. It is unlikely that the reader will forget the Bolo Battalions...their achievements, their courage , or their adventures." The author, Gordon Donald Shirreffs (1914 - 1996) was a U.S. author, known mostly for writing Western and Juvenile (young adult) novels. He also wrote a teleplay. Two of his novels, Judas Gun and Rio Bravo, were made into movies "A Long Ride from Hell" (1967) and "Rio Brave" (1959), respectively. One of his short stories "Silent Beckoning" became the movie "The Lonesome Trail (1955). His novel "Last Train From Gunhill" was made into a film starring Kirk Douglas and Anthony Quinn and released in 1959. Strangely, however, Les Crutchfield, who wrote a great deal for 'Gunsmoke' is cited as the author for the story and Shirreffs' name is not given although all of the character names and plot follows those in the novel. - Wikipedia
