The Gray Sea Raiders

(1961)
A novel by

The 'gray sea raiders' were the men of the Confederate States Navy who were determined to harass, burn or capture the northern ships in the Atlantic. Sixteen year old Clint Wallace, Acting Midshipman of the Florida participated in these daring exploits under the command of Lieutenant Maffit, who armed the ship in the Bahamas where many Confederate vessels received aid despite the profit of numerous privateers intent on lining their own pockets. Overcoming numerous obstacles including disease, Union retaliation and ammunition problems, the Florida carried out its orders with great success. Then on to the Clarence where Clint sees more action at sea. The author is well schooled in his subject and though he writes patterned fiction, boys who relish historical adventure will want this one as well.
