There was no chance I was following my boss to his new home, a million kilometers north of nowhere.

So what if he was also my best—maybe my only real—friend. That town is too small. Too claustrophobic. And there are no dance clubs. So when he low-key abducted me after the disastrous New Years Dance Club Incident and brought me back to his boyfriend’s farm, I was not super happy with the arrangement.

When he volentold me I had to house-sit for a friend of a friend of his, I might have told him where he could shove his job.

That would explain why he failed to mention that I was also baby-sitting the world’s most obnoxious parrot. He also left out the part about the parrot’s owner being an over-the-top nervous pet parent.

It should not have been a surprise that Mel-no-one-ever-calls-me-Melvin, came back to check on his beloved bird. Unexpectedly. In the middle of my trying to get the feathered menace down from the ten-foot bookshelf.

My broken leg was the parrot’s fault.

Mel agrees that everything that happened after that was also because of that meddling bird.
