The last year has been a nightmare for Jack Wilmont. So when a serial killer after a year of nothing strikes on the first day of Jack's personal leave, he knows the nightmare is only beginning. Jack agrees to look at the evidence, but his one good deed leads him into the case of a missing nine-year-old girl abducted from her home. Knowing he is in over his head, Jack does what comes naturally, he enlists the help of his former partner. When all fingers point to the girl's mother as the abductor, Jack must face his undeniable attraction to the suspect, while racing the clock to prove her innocence. The problem is, there are too many avenues to investigate, especially in an unofficial capacity. Faced with the uncertainties of both cases, Jack's ire is raised when the FBI swoops in to take over the serial case, but he refuses to give up, feeling in his gut that they are underestimating the killer. They know they are after a dangerous psychopath, but no one could have realized his brilliance or his position in the medical community. The plot they uncover is complex, sophisticated, and far more evil than anyone is prepared for.
