Danny is an undercover cop at Mandy's college. Just one good piece of evidence, and he can bust Richard's drug gang. But making Mandy laugh is becoming more important to him. Oh, and Mandy is scouring thrift stores for nice clothes to impress Richard. Excerpt:
Mandy ‘sampled’ the makeup until she liked how she looked.
Ooh. In the big mirror on the counter, she saw Richard getting on the up escalator.
He was here!
If she ran, she could get on right behind him. She would be a little late for her hair appointment, but who cares? Any chance to talk to him alone was one she had to take.
After a quick second to make sure her makeup and hair were perfect, she rushed to catch up with him.
And accidentally smacked Danny’s chest with her hand.
It was like hitting a brick wall, the man was so solid. Where had he come from?
“I am so sorry,” she told her friend. “I was in such a hurry, I wasn’t looking where I was going.”
Danny steadied her, looking concerned and holding on a moment more than strictly necessary. “Is your hand okay? You pack a pretty good punch for a girl.”
Even as she watched her last chance at ‘accidentally’ catching up with Richard fade away, this made her laugh. “I bet you didn’t even feel it.”
Danny was such a nice guy, so his reluctant smiles always made her wonder what was wrong. Like the one he gave her now as his eyes darted toward the escalator. Oh well. He was probably just noticing she was looking that way.
Back to his normal self, he made one of his corny jokes. “What is good King Wenceslas’ favorite pizza?”
She couldn’t resist. “Don’t know, but I’m sure you’re going to tell me.”
Danny nodded with a grin. “One that’s deep-pan, crisp, and even.”
Even as Mandy chuckled, she held up her hands. “No more. You are way too silly.”
But it was no use. Danny was relentless. “What did Adam say the day before Christmas?”
Mandy shrugged. “No idea.”
Danny raised his brows with a twinkle in his eye. “It’s Christmas, Eve.”
Mandy giggled. “Enough, enough.”
But Danny never stopped at fewer than three. “One more and I’ll let you get on with your morning.”
She must have imagined how his eyes slid back over to the escalator, where Richard was disappearing from sight at the top.
Danny put his own hands up and turned his head to indicate he was retreating now and this would be his parting shot. “Why was the snowman looking through the carrots?”
