Jesse Sublett, semi-legendary Austin musician and author, first published this series about an Austin blues bass player in the late 1980s, starting with Rock Critic Murders. Martin Fender is a veteran Austin musician who moonlights as a skip tracer and problem solver. In this second novel in the series, Martin returns to Austin numb and homesick after a hard tour and is sucked into a spiral of payola, blackmail, perversion and violence, tied to a crooked and demented record label owner and a thrift shop operator in the underworld of the Austin music scene. Dangerous women and desperate musicians and hustlers conspire, clash and create music, mayhem and violence. As always in Martin Fender's world, the one true thing is the music itself.
