Mercenary of Rome: The Trilogy
(2021)(A book in the Mercenary of Rome series)
An omnibus of novels by John Stack
Experience the glory and gore of the ancient world with all three of John Stack’s astonishingly vivid Mercenary of Rome novels.
The trilogy opens with Mutiny. Following many years of war with Rome, Carthage is exhausted. But the trouble is not over yet.
Veteran Roman sailor and prefect Atticus Perennis is fighting pirates in the seas around Sicily. Perpetually an outsider, despite his Roman citizenship, Atticus is a fine warrior with more than one point to prove. And when the military commander of Carthage, Hamilcar Barca needs some help, it seems that Atticus’ chance may have come.
The second book in the series is Retribution. Atticus Perennis is stranded in Carthage. His Roman masters have all but abandoned him, and he now faces an angry mercenary army; for while the senators and consuls of Rome bicker and debate, the mercenaries around Utica are running out of patience and strain at the leash.
Aided once more by his comrade Septimus, Atticus must overcome the raging mercenaries and defend the interests of his adopted homeland.
The trilogy ends with Treachery, which finds Atticus and his crew waiting nervously for news from Rome, hoping for ships to help put down a rebel mercenary army. When word reaches them that a fleet is on its way, it seems there might be an end in sight to the ceaseless violence. But the optimism does not last long, and as treachery and deception threaten the lives of Atticus and his men, all sides must come to a final stand.
All three books are meticulously-rendered tales of politics and war in the Roman era, and take an unflinching look at the details of battle and occupation, and the compromises of allegiance. Mercenary of Rome: The Trilogy will delight fans of Roman history, historical fiction and military fiction alike.
Praise for Mercenary of Rome:
’The characters are vividly drawn, the action is exciting, in other words, it is what good historical-fiction looks like. The battle scenes are of the no holds barred variety; the sounds and smells, the battle lust seep through the pages’ - Goodreads review
‘This is a must read for followers of historical fiction’ - Goodreads review
