Richard Plantagenet

(1997)
A novel by

As a child, despite his frailty, he had an almost primitive simplicity of character; an ability to see things only as good or evil, right or wrong which could cause Richard great suffering. He would need protection against the outside world, but he would need it most of all against himself...

Richard III is one of the most controversial figures in English history and has been the subject of debate for over three centuries. Was he the deformed, evil monster of the Tudor historians and Shakespeare? Or was he the perfect knight that some of his apologists would have us believe? Probably he was neither.

Richard, By Grace of God attempts to present Richard's life as he might have lived it and most of the incidents are founded on fact. It is about the people and events which shaped his life and about a conflict of loyalties which forced Richard, at a cruelly early age, to choose between the brother he adored and his Neville kinsmen whom he loved. It also offers a possible solution to one of the most famous murder mysteries of all time - what happened to the Princes in the Tower?
