When middle-aged, Daniel Kent suddenly loses his wife, Helen, after forty years of marriage it seems like the end of the world. They’ve brought up their three children, Adam, Chloe and Lauren as an ordinary Jewish family, in a comfortable, North London house, a house which, now, over-night, has too many rooms.
Adam is an established financial adviser in Manhattan, recovering from a traumatic divorce from Carly, the daughter of one of the most powerful men in New York. Lauren is in an abusive relationship with her non-Jewish husband, Luke and lives in the West Country with him and her two small children. Chloe appears to be happily married to the successful Damien and also has two children, one of whom, Tommy, is autistic.
Whilst Daniel struggles to cope with his grief, he cannot imagine anything worse can happen to him and his family. He helps Lauren escape with her children to London, but Luke will not let go easily and is prepared to do anything to get what he really wants. Adam is fighting for his children and his career, whilst developing a relationship with his sassy New York lawyer of which he knows his mother would not have approved. Chloe is forced to reassess her marriage when Damien cannot resist temptation putting their whole relationship at risk. As the drama of his family life is played out against this background, Daniel discovers that neither his business nor his long-term partner, school friend David Segal are what they have always seemed to be and that he may be at the heart of a property fraud.
As his very liberty is threatened, a guilty secret from his past emerges which might prove to be either his salvation or his nemesis. Can Daniel Kent prevent the whole structure of his life crashing down on his head and burying him alive? Can he preserve his family, his livelihood and his liberty? Can he survive in the house with too many rooms and restore it to its former glory of a happy home?
This is a compelling family drama by Mel Stein, the well-respected author of best-selling novels such as “Rags to Riches”, “The White Corridors” , “Race Against Time” and “Football Babylon”.
