Dr. Mary Edwards Walker, the only woman to receive the Medal of Honor, was an American abolitionist, prohibitionist, prisoner of war, and surgeon. She volunteered as a surgeon with the Union Army in the American Civil War, and was captured by Confederate forces after crossing enemy lines to treat wounded civilians and arrested as a spy. She was sent to Richmond, Virginia, as a prisoner of war, until she was released in a prisoner exchange.
