While a prisoner in the nightmarish cloud city of Kharith, Ro-lan learns the secret of Ras-ek Varano's powers, and he makes another startling discovery: on the island of Mesharra, far from Boranga, there dwells a "sorcerer" named Thusar with powers that equal those of the Master. But will he and his friends be able to escape from Kharith? And even if they reach Mesharra, will Thusar be willing to help them destroy Ras-ek? Or has he too been corrupted by those same powers?

"Hear this warning, and heed it, for your life is in great peril if you proceed beyond this point. Do not expend time debating what I say, for I am naught but the image of Thusar, and therefore incapable of communication. I left your world for reasons of my own, ones that I believe justifiable, and not subject to account. Nor will I return, ever! That is all to be said on the matter that more than likely brought you here. Turn back now! It is not my wish to see you destroyed, but this will surely be your fate if you continue... "
