This novel presents the life story of a London girl, Kate Grimsdale, daughter of a bigoted clergyman who begins life in a London department store and drops anchor in Gracie's Harbor, a remote Caribbean island on which she creates and manages a luxury resort from the illicit profits of "rum-running" during the Prohibition experiment in America. Kate manages the lives of her own and her foster children in masterly fashion, but is less successful where her own is concerned. Period: 1915 - 1940.
