Michael Ahearn is a loving father, vaguely discontented husband and professor at a mediocre rural college. Lara Purcell, meanwhile, is an expert in third world politics, newly arrived on the campus from the Caribbean. Michael finds himself inexorably drawn to her, his obsession fuelled by their mutual attraction and quickly spiralling into an affair.
