Fran was to be the governess for the orphaned heir of Grangerfjord Castle. Because she was running away from a disastrous love affair, she welcomed the wild isolation of the gloomy old castle with the strange golden statues on its parapets. Little by little she sensed that there were malign influences at work on her young charge--a fleeting glimpse of a grotesque animal, the surly insolence of a caretaker...Then Fran realized that the threat was not only against the child, but herself.
