Gasthalma may be dead, but she's not gone. The line of Ajad has been one of Ahat's favorite minions for thousands of years; therefore, when Ghastly pleads her case to her lord, he gives her a second chance in the tiny helpless form of Inyue and Tyen's baby girl. Suspecting that something is wrong with the child, the Westland couple invites Kay and Sularin to visit because it is well known that Gasthalma could not stand to be touched by Kay. To their horror, they find that Gasthalma is reborn.
In her effort to lighten the situation, Kay takes Sularin to see how she got to Erith by showing him the half-house still mouldering-away in the Wik's hunting park. The house snaps back to Earth, carrying Sularin and Kay with it. Now their problem is how many worlds are they going to have to go through and how many enemies are they going to have to defeat in their efforts to get home- all of the while plagued by Gasthalma who is not going to give Sularin up easily.
