A novel by

It's 1985 and a fine early summer in the north-eastern French province of Lorraine, when sixteen year-old Pauline Archibald, only child of a schoolteacher and librarian from Manchester, arrives at the run-down 'Les Sapins' as an 'au pair' to failing businessman Olivier Vincente, his depressed wife Renée and their two younger teenage children, Nicolas and Solange.

Pauline soon senses a growing malaise in the air, and it's not long before her own life is turned upside down by risky temptations and an aristocratic, infertile woman whose ruthlessness knows no bounds. Wife of Jean-Marie, a successful lawyer and also Olivier's twin brother, she has her own dark, malevolent agenda.

Can Pauline survive such a worsening and dangerous situation, or will she decide to head for home?

Only time will tell, and time is fast running out.
