Jacob Graves has met his match.
Death is coming for me from every angle.
About a month ago I accidentally cursed myself and now the insidious magic is creeping through my body and working its way to my heart. When it gets there I’ll die.
There is no known cure. At least that’s what the books say, but don’t believe everything you read. As my uncle likes to say, there’s a way around every spell.
Dorian Gray can cure my curse and he will — for a price. His enemy, the new Prime Wizard, Magraval, has barricaded himself behind all the magical protections of the Hall of Wizardry. The spells are so strong no wizard can enter without first swearing an unbreakable oath of loyalty to Magraval. If I get Dorian’s people past the spells so they can get their hands on Magraval, he will cure me.
If only that was all.
I thought I was the best assassin in the country. It turns out I might not even be the best in the city. Zaleria Alvara, the elvish assassin, was hired to murder the mayor’s family. Now I’ve been hired to kill her.
When I go after her I quickly learn how skilled she really is. She can outmove me, outfight me, and she can outwit me.
Zaleria gets the jump on me and uses my blood to bind my life to hers. Any damage she sustains, I feel too. Killing her just got a whole lot harder. Oh, and to top it all off she was hired by none other than Dorian Gray. So I have to kill her without the immortal ever finding out or I’ll never get my cure.
It would be easier to let her go but I never break a contract. I just have to figure how to kill her without also killing myself.
