Yoel Casado-Arellano gets everything he wants. Last minute book report? No problem; a classmate has him covered. Gym class second period? Well, the class isn't challenging enough to warrant attending, and anyway, he's got that book report to write. Teachers and students alike bend to his will, blind to his silver tongue. It feels good to be the king.

It's summertime, and Yoel's mom is sick of him playing life on Easy Mode. Determined to wring some responsibility out of him, she sends him to live with his estranged father. His dad owns an amusement park and intends to put Yoel to work for the summer. Yoel thinks he'll be able to skate by on his usual charms. Then he arrives at the amusement park, and his world turns upside-down. Dreams Come True is an amusement park for terminally ill children.

Yoel doesn't want to spend his summer entertaining dying children. It means contending with a world where Easy Mode isn't available to everyone. Sam Phillips, a fellow youth worker, says there is beauty in the amusement park, but Yoel doesn't see it. Sam Phillips is a problem all his own. Yoel didn't ask to catch feelings for another boy, thanks. He's very straight and very content and very much not imagining what it would feel like if they kissed on the carousel.

If only kissing boys were the worst of his problems. A change in insurance policies means Dreams Come True is running low on money this year. Yoel can't sit by and watch sick kids lose the only magic they've ever known. He comes up with a plan for the summer: use his powers over persuasion to annoy everyone he meets into funding the amusement park. Twelve million dollars is no big deal, right? Wait a minute...he only has three months?
