Thea Acheson, unexpectedly pregnant by the husband she has just left, finds work and lodging with June Theriault, an aging shepherdess. June grazes her sheep on land owned by guitarist Chris Larkin, who traded performance for seclusion after the mysterious deaths of his wife and father. Thea and Chris become friends and then lovers, but life on this small patch of land on Maine's Penobscot coast is anything but bucolic, thanks to Chris's entanglement with his dangerously troubled family.
