The Heroine or the Horse
(1977)Leading Ladies in Republic's Films
A non fiction book by Thomas Burnett Swann
Best known for its Saturday Westerns in its pre-war days, the studio went on to produce some good quality films (eg Johnny Guitar) and engaged Joan Crawford, Dorothy Maguire, Barbara Stanwyck and a host of other big names, including some, like Rita Hayworth, before they were stars. Among the men, its one superstar was John Wayne. The studio survived until sold to Columbia in 1960. The book is a compelling survey of its numerous leading ladies and a history of the studio.
