This remarkable collection follows explorer Tim Severin as he recreates some of the greatest journeys from history and literature.
The first tale in this omnibus is The China Voyage, in which Tim Severin and his team attempt to travel from Vietnam to America on a bamboo raft, to test the theory that Asian soldiers reached America some 2,000 years ago.
The team – Tim, Loi, Joe, Mark, Geoffrey, Rex and Nina –undertake a long and arduous journey, with challenges that range from searches by Japanese police to encounters with pirates. Will they all reach America alive? And meanwhile, will they be able to keep the peace in the small space they all share?
Next comes The Ulysses Voyage. In this adventure, Tim Severin recreates Ulysses’ voyage home after the Trojan War, as described in The Odyssey.
Along the way, he makes tentative or conclusive identifications of the land of the lotus-eaters, King Nestor's palace, the Halls of Hades, the Roving Rocks, and the sea monsters Scylla and Charybdis.
Finally, in The Spice Islands Voyage, Severin retraces a voyage made by Alfred Wallace – whom Charles Darwin acknowledged as an inspiration for his own work – in the Spice Islands. Severin and his crew stop at Wallace's ports of call from the Aru Islands in the east to Sulawesi in the west, taking pictures, recording sightings of butterflies and birds, checking out the environmental record and interviewing local officials.
The Voyage Series Omnibus is a fascinating and thought-provoking read, ideal for anyone interested in natural history, sailing or travel. It also serves as a great introduction to Tim Severin’s work generally.
