Vita (Victoria Mary) Sackville-West's 12th 1953 novel is about an Easter weekend garden party and the interactions between the complex characters that attend. Adolphe and a Winter's Tale spring to mind, and like many of her books, this one can be read either as an engrossing story or a pleasurable parody of a parable. This edition, published in 1955 in the Mermaid Books Series, prompted by the optimism of the 1951 Festival of Britain, was introduced by Michael Joseph to celebrate its best new books in a then new and lively but premium laminated 'cardback' non-hardback format.
