Historical NoteWyoming Territory became a state adhering to US in 1890. At the time, Wyomings constitution allowed women to vote while the US constitution didnt.Wyoming voted womens suffrage into law in Dec 1869 and in 1870 Louisa Swain was the first woman to vote in the country. Women were allowed to serve in juries and had other rights also, and the first woman, Esther Hobart Morris was appointed as justice of peace in 1870.The US Congress didnt allow a constitution that included suffrage for women and asked the Territory to drop it as a condition to be part of the Union. The state legislature made a point of keeping the suffrage in the constitution no matter what.In the end, in 1890 Wyoming became the forty-forth state of the US, the first to allow women to vote. Other western states did the same later on, although officially only in Aug 1920 it was approved and ratified by the Congress as the nineteenth Amendment to the Constitution.
