The Case of the Silk King
(1986)(Book 53 in the Choose Your Own Adventure series)
A novel by Shannon Gilligan
A 15-YEAR OLD CASE RE-OPENS. WHAT HAPPENED TO JIM THOMPSON THAT DAY IN 1967? AND WHO WILL DO ANYTHING TO KEEP YOU FROM FINDING OUT?
You are a detective with a couple of big cases under your belt, despite your youth. Things have been slow around the office when an envelope containing a plane ticket to Bangkok, Thailand, two thousand dollars cash and a newspaper story about an unsolved disappearance arrives in the mail. The story tells of a well-known American named Jim Thompson who disappeared while visiting friends in Malaysia. Foul play was suspected and the case was never solved. But now someone thinks they've spotted Thompson living as a Buddhist monk in northern Thailand. Should you take the case?
"What a strange story!" your assistant Sam exclaims. "Especially that part about Thompson being in the OSS," you add. "What's the OSS?" Sam asks. "It stands for Office of Strategic Services," you reply. "Later it turned into the CIA." "You mean Thompson was once a spy?" "Probably. You know what they say: Once a spy, always a spy."
If you decide to leave for Bangkok tonight, turn to page 12. If you decide to put off leaving until you have more information, turn to page 4.
Genre: Children's Fiction
