A Novella by Maryse Meijer
"The thirteen stories in Maryse Meijer's Heartbreaker are defiant to their type and bold within their bounds. "Home" leads the collection and holds the reader like the man behind the wheel holds the girl in the passenger seat: with a casual sense of control, and a subtle, lurking malice. The girl calls herself Ophelia and cajoles beer out of wary bartenders, levelling her predatory observation on an older man who takes her home despite his better judgment. The man plays a strange role. He is an understudy for a villain, seeming uncertain of his own aims and how she caught his attention, or how he caught hers. In this story, even sizing someone up is a gendered act, and in this particular story it's the girl who takes measure of the man. " - Amelia Gray
