Can the rigors of a rodeo help Cathleen separate the wheat from the chaff and find a new ranch foreman?
Cathleen and her husband had made a perfect team running their ranch. She took care of the logistics, keeping everyone, human and animal, fed and cared for; managing blood lines for show stock; and keeping the day-to-day operations moving along. Her husband had been in charge of the men and animals that made up the ranch. Then Ronald had died, leaving her alone with 4-1/2 children and the ranch.
Their head wrangler, Calvin, was doing his best, but they needed an active cattleman to keep the ranch moving forward. Not that women couldn't run a ranch. Some did. But Cathleen had too much to learn before she could take over the reins. Including how to ride a horse.
Calvin suggested placing an advertisement in one of the larger newspapers. They decided on: "Mid-sized cattle operation seeks experienced ranch manager/foreman."
The tired typesetter was finishing up the personals section, his eyes jumping back and forth from the copy to the slugs when his eye skipped to a similar listing. The advertisement that was posted, with replies to be sent to Cathleen's box, read: "Widow with children seeks ranch manager; object matrimony." The letters came pouring in.
